Chandlery - Sailing Equipment

Chandlery - Sailing Equipment

To sail a yacht you must have/hire a Life Jacket, which normally start at around £30 and appropriate clothing. For safety purposes you will also want to consider a small flare pack, knife with serrated edge, tool kit a small first aid kit and bottled water. (All of these items will be provided on any hire/charter yacht.)

The weather can be unpredictable so it's a good idea to be prepared for all conditions. The following equipment is essential:

  • Warm waterproof clothing
  • Suitable footwear that will keep your feet dry i.e. old wellies (if they have grip) or sailing boats
  • Soft trainers or deck shoes (avoid black hard soles as they may damage or mark the deck)Thin layers of clothing - these will keep you warmer than heavy jumpers and won't restrict your movement.
  • Gloves
  • A warm hat/sun hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses

But there are many more aspects to equipment for sailing, from ropes and sails, through to pulleys and much more and this is called Chandlery. Most marinas have a chandlery where you can buy sailing equipment and clothing.
