Star of BBC TV holiday show set to launch new heritage division of Norfolk based Broom Boats at their annual boat show.
- 1957 Broads cruiser ‘Jenny Wren’, to be launched back into the water at the Broom Boat Show on Saturday 16th April following extensive restoration works.
- ‘Jenny Wren’ featured in the BBC’s ‘Holidays of our Lifetime’ with Len Goodman and Fiona Phillips.
- The unveiling marks the launch of a new restoration and repair division ‘Heritage by Broom Marine Services’ specialising in wooden craft of all ages.
- The Broom Boat Show is on Saturday 16th April at Broom Boats, Riverside, Brundall NR13 5PX from 10am – 4pm. Free entry.
Jenny Wren is a beautiful example of a traditional wooden cruiser, built by Broom in 1957. She has been maintained by Broom throughout her lifetime keeping many of her original features, and when the boat came up for sale recently, Broom took the opportunity to buy her back. This charming little boat became a local celebrity when she appeared on the BBC programme ‘Holidays of our Lifetime’, where Len Goodman took television presenter Fiona Phillips on a tour of the Broads where she spent many memorable childhood holidays.
Jenny Wren proved to be the perfect project to showcase Broom’s skills and historic credentials with wooden craft, and she has undergone a full restoration complete with a stunning new interior refit. Greg Houlston, General Manager of Broom Marine Services said “We have some of the best boat builders in the country here at Broom, who have been building boats with us since the 1960’s. We clearly have the skills and knowledge, so utilising that and launching a heritage division was a
natural step for us”. ‘Heritage by Broom Marine Services’ will offer repairs and restoration to wooden and GRP boats of all ages, including full interior design and bespoke upholstery.
The Broom Boat Show continues to grow and this year sees more exhibitors, with on-site
entertainment and caterers offering hot food, fresh coffee and homemade cakes. For the first time
there will be the opportunity to view the full range of new boats, alongside a wide range of preowned boats of various marques. There is the opportunity to see how the boats are built on a factory tour, or try a boat with a cruise down the river. The unveiling of Jenny Wren will take place at midday and she will be available to view on the quayside for the rest of the day.
For over a century Broom have been designing and building hand-crafted boats from the Broom marina in Brundall. In 2016 the boats being built look quite different, but the skills, attention to detail and love of boats has been passed down through the generations to ensure that Broom is a trusted boat builder with a
global reputation for outstanding quality and personal service.
